'Why you should join me on the MM2026 Scientific Program Committee'
A minute with Stephen Louey, MM2026 Scientific Program Chair, reflecting on MM2025.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of being part of a Medicines Management Scientific Program Committee?
The most rewarding part of being on the Medicines Management Scientific Program Committee was witnessing the program come to life. Seeing the smiles, enthusiasm, and willingness of delegates to share their research and knowledge made all the effort throughout the year worthwhile. I also enjoyed reading about everyone’s experiences during and after MM2025 - the energy and inspiration they gained to take back to their workplaces was incredible. Knowing that our contribution will positively influence their professional journey is truly fulfilling.
What surprised you the most about being on the SPC?
I was surprised by how challenging it was to put together a conference program. The Scientific Program Committee generated an enormous number of speakers and topic suggestions, and being decisive about who to select—while ensuring suitability and fitting them into the complex puzzle of the program—was no easy task. Despite this, our committee collaborated exceptionally well to complete the process efficiently.
What skills, perspectives and/or personally gained from being on the SPC?
Being on the SPC has helped me build confidence in speaking to large audiences. It also gave me a deeper appreciation for the immense effort required to organize a conference, including the many people working behind the scenes to make it happen. Additionally, this role provided opportunities to contribute to the program and connect with a broader network of professionals.
What makes someone a good fit for the SPC?
Someone who is creative, motivated and committed to contribute to the profession, willing to share their thoughts and opinions, embrace new challenges and can continue to strive forward despite setbacks.
If you could give a piece of advice to someone considering submitting an EOI, what would it be?
If you are thinking of submitting an EOI but aren't sure if you have the knowledge or skills, just apply!! I did this as a junior pharmacist 10 years ago and learnt so much! You'll surprise yourself in what you can achieve and contribute just by being part of the journey.
