Technician Competency Standards

Overview

Pharmacy technicians are skilled healthcare professionals integral to pharmacy services and the broader health workforce across Australia and New Zealand. These competency standards represent the first profession-wide framework defining what competent pharmacy technician practice looks like - from entry level through to expert practice.

The framework was developed in partnership with a working group of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists representing diverse practice settings across both countries. The standards apply to pharmacy technicians working across hospital, health service, and community settings, providing a consistent foundation for professional practice while allowing flexibility for different contexts.

The framework reflects input from across the profession. Following comprehensive development and review, AdPha consulted with pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and key stakeholders in both Australia and New Zealand throughout 2024 and 2025.
