Healthcare contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, with pharmaceuticals and metered dose inhalers (MDIs) among the largest contributors. Children are disproportionately affected by climate change, facing increased risks of respiratory conditions, heat stress, and pollution-related illnesses. MDIs, though effective and commonly used in paediatric care, have a high carbon footprint due to propellants, which possess thousands of times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. While sustainable alternatives exist for adults and older children, reducing emissions in younger paediatric populations remains challenging, requiring innovative and tailored solutions.
Medication safety involves ensuring that medicines are used appropriately and without causing harm. Dr Felicity Wright is the Director of Pharmacy at Sydney Children’s Hospital. She trained as a cellular therapy and oncology pharmacist, is a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (USA), and holds a Masters of Public Health Policy and has a PhD in pharmacogenetics. In addition to her Director role, Dr Wright is the NSW Ministry of Health Net Zero Hub Lead and the Net Zero Clinical Lead for the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. She is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of pharmaceuticals, which are widely reported to contribute 20% of healthcare's carbon emissions. Dr Wright is committed to decarbonising paediatric clinical care, focusing on high-value care pathways and reducing the burden of low-value care. Her work clearly articulates strategies for carbon-based reduction, aiming to create a sustainable future in healthcare.
