Practice Update supporting VAD conversations
As Voluntary Assisted Dying is now legal in most parts of Australia, AdPha has released a VAD Practice Update to help the pharmacy workforce be prepared for discussions that may arise about VAD.
This update, developed by the AdPha VAD Working Group, Tanya Burgess FANZCAP (VAD), Niki Ferreira FANZCAP (VAD), Janette Haw, Catherine Li ANZCAP-Reg. (PallCare, VAD), Nicky Maddern FANZCAP (Lead&Mgmt, VAD), Suzanne Olding FANZCAP (EmergMed, Neuro.), addresses the legal frameworks, ethical considerations and practical aspects of VAD across Australian jurisdictions.
Pharmacists and technicians are advised to examine their own stance on VAD and understand referral pathways to ensure compliant and compassionate care.Highlights include:
-
outlining the varying legal criteria for VAD across states and territories
-
guidance on conducting respectful and lawful discussions about VAD with patients, colleagues and employers
-
resources to support pharmacists' wellbeing
-
a checklist to assess your readiness for VAD conversations.
