Pharmacy ‘in motion’ as MM2025 kicks off in Melbourne
A near record number of delegates have descended on the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre this morning for the start of Advanced Pharmacy Australia’s (AdPha)’s 49th national conference - Medicines Management 2025 (MM2025).
Following the ministerial address of the Hon. Emma McBride MP FANZCAP (Lead&Mgmt, MentalHlth) in the opening plenary this morning, AdPha President Assoc. Prof. Tom Simpson FANZCAP (Lead&Mgmt) announced the elevation of Rosemary Burke DFAdPha to the title of AdPha Distinguished Fellow, the eighth member to receive the honour.
‘Rosemary has positively impacted almost all areas of hospital pharmacy – most notably electronic medication management, medication safety, QUM and training and education – through innumerable leadership roles, including many within our Society.
‘Rosemary exemplifies collaboration, accountability, respect and integrity, and is a most worthy recipient of AdPha Distinguished Fellowship.’
Building on its recent release of Australasia’s first Competency Standards for Technicians, Assoc. Prof. Simpson announced a new pathway for Technicians through ANZCAP, providing new support for Australia’s strengthening Technician workforce.
‘ANZCAP continues to empower pharmacists and technicians to reach new heights, and today marks another important milestone, with 3,000 practitioners now having completed – or in the process of completing – an ANZCAP portfolio.
‘The introduction of new technician competency standards and the ANZCAP Independent Pathway for Technicians from 2026 will further empower technicians to work to their full potential, while providing pharmacists more time for direct patient care.’
Assoc. Prof. Simpson also announced the organisation’s first new clinical resource in a decade, ObesiD, Australia’s first drug dosing guideline for obesity, to be delivered via a new partnership with Therapeutic Guidelines.
AdPha Medicines Information Leadership Committee Co-Chair Jeanie Misko FANZCAP (MedInfo, MedsMgmt), and member of the AdPha ObesiD Working Party, says the resource is timely.
‘As an increasing number of Australians live with overweight or obesity, it is important to consider how to optimise medication dosing and outcomes in this cohort.
'ObesiD, created by a hardworking team of pharmacists and experts, will offer concise, evidence-based information on dosing for many common medications.’
The new partnership with Therapeutic Guidelines will deliver a modern platform, available on both desktop and mobile, giving pharmacists and other health professionals quick, seamless access to trusted, evidence-based guidance without the need for extensive searching.
‘This year’s theme of “Pharmacy in motion” captures the energy and momentum of our profession, and we’re so proud of the strength of Medicines Management as a unique platform to help members connect, collaborate and share their successes.
‘With yesterday’s release of Australia’s first comprehensive insight report into the hospital pharmacy workforce, and last month’s release of Pharmacy Forecast Australia 2025, we approach the end of the year clear-eyed about where we are today, what’s coming next, and how advanced pharmacy expertise can improve pharmacy care for all Australians.’
Medicines Management 2025 (MM2025) is taking place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 27 – 29 November.
