New JPPR issue spotlights diversion risk, sustainability and practice innovation

Advanced Pharmacy Australia (AdPha) has released the latest issue of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research (JPPR) featuring new Australian-led research on medicines, antimicrobial stewardship and sustainability in practice, as new data shows booming readership and article submissions for Australia’s pre-eminent academic pharmacy publication.

A key study in this issue, led by Martin Canning FANZCAP (MedSafety) and Assoc. Prof Chris Freeman, examines how hospitals can better manage the risk of diversion for commonly used medicines not classified as Schedule 8. Using a Delphi consensus approach with medication safety experts, the research assessed 14 high-risk medicines and found that while no single strategy suits all drugs, the most widely supported safeguards include restricted access via proxy card systems and secure storage in locked medication rooms.

This latest issue features six research articles and a brief report spanning contemporary challenges in pharmacy practice - from the environmental impact of medication packaging through to prescribing practices and barriers to surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis compliance.

AdPha President, Assoc. Prof Tom Simpson FANZCP (Lead&Mgmt), said JPPR’s booming metrics reflect the growing strength and influence of pharmacy-led research in Australia.

‘JPPR continues to demonstrate the depth and maturity of pharmacy research in this country. As we mark 60 years of publication, we are seeing not only a rise in submissions but a clear uplift in engagement and global reach.

‘This year alone, submissions have increased by more than 30 per cent and readership by over 25 per cent - strong indicators that the journal’s impact and reputation are continuing to grow.

‘This momentum is a direct reflection of the expertise, curiosity and commitment across our profession. I want to acknowledge the authors, reviewers and editorial team whose work ensures JPPR remains a trusted source of high-quality, practice-relevant research.’

Issue 2, 2026 of Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research is now available, free as always for AdPha members.
