AdPha celebrates a year of growth, inclusion and impact

Advanced Pharmacy Australia (AdPha) has released its 2025 Annual Report, celebrating a year of major achievements in advocacy, digital engagement, and professional recognition across the pharmacy workforce, plus a record 452 members listed on the 2025 AdPha Honour Roll for their leadership and contributions.

Representing more than 5,800 pharmacists and technicians nationwide, AdPha continues to champion team-based care and advanced practice – empowering members to work at the top of their scope and deliver safer, more effective and patient-centred care in hospitals, at transitions of care, in aged care and general practice.

AdPha President Assoc. Prof. Tom Simpson FANZCAP (Lead&Mgmt) said the organisation’s first full year trading as Advanced Pharmacy Australia has been defined by progress, inclusion and ‘getting on with the job’.

Through our Yindyamarra 2030 vision for the future of advanced pharmacy, we’re proud to be building a future where pharmacists and technicians grow and succeed together - freeing capacity, supporting sustainability, and strengthening access to safe and effective medicines.

Inclusion has always been at the heart of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia and, as AdPha, we are opening a new era of possibility and potential through the launch of the Australasian Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacy Technicians in Hospitals and Health Services, which will benefit pharmacists and technicians alike.

‘Today we celebrate a fantastic 2025 and more is on the way, with announcements on workforce, publications and research to be highlights of a huge Medicines Management 2025 (MM2025) in Melbourne in two weeks’ time.

‘We’re proud to stand up for our members and be a positive force for change in Australian pharmacy, as hospital-informed expertise helps drive safety, innovation, and better patient outcomes.’

Highlights of 2025 Annual Report include:

  • more than 6,800 professionals participated in 107 national events through AdPha Learning, with an average satisfaction rate of 98.7%;
  • more than 3,000 pharmacy practitioners have either an active ANZCAP recognition or an in-progress ANZCAP portfolio, conferring professional postnominals;
  • key reforms through advocacy such as extending the Closing the Gap PBS Co-payment Program to public hospitals and advancing pharmacist prescribing reforms across Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales;
  • 15 AdPha members appointed to influential national committees shaping digital health, clinical governance and health system reform;
  • the third annual MedsAware: Deprescribing Action Week attracted global backing from 16 health organisations to promote safe and sustainable medicine use;
  • four new or updated specialty practice standards, complementing the 2024 release of the Advanced Pharmacy Australia Clinical Pharmacy Standards;

  • more than 60,000 views and comments across 1,200+ Specialty Practice discussions in the first full year of the AdPha Communities platform.

AdPha Chief Executive Kristin Michaels says the size and depth of the 2025 AdPha Honour Roll reflects enthusiasm across the membership.

‘This year’s honour roll showcases the commitment members have shown over the past 12 months to advance Australian pharmacy and patient care.

‘From Branch Committees and Specialty Practice Leadership groups to national programs and events across advocacy, education and workforce development, the expertise and energy of our members is the heartbeat of AdPha.

‘Across our growing programs and initiatives, I thank each and every member for their engagement, participation and leadership, making the results of this year possible.’

At the organisation’s annual meeting on Monday, Dr Kate O’Hara FANZCAP (Neonatol., Paeds) stepped down as AdPha Vice President, with Brenda Shum FANZCAP (Lead&Mgmt) subsequently elected to the role.

Assoc. Prof. Simpson was re-elected as AdPha President and Ramy Aziz re-elected AdPha Treasurer, completing the leadership team for 2026 with Kristin Michaels continuing as Chief Executive.
