‘Excellence, rigour and deep commitment to care’: Assoc. Prof. Jonathan Penm wins Australian Clinical Pharmacy Award
Advanced Pharmacy Australia (AdPha) today awarded Assoc. Prof. Jonathan Penm FANZCAP (PainMgmt, Research) the 2025 Australian Clinical Pharmacy Award for his exceptional national and international contributions to clinical pharmacy, medication safety, research and health system improvement.
Assoc. Prof. Penm has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of hospital pharmacy through his global leadership and influential research. Through his work with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) he co-led the 2024 revision of the Basel Statements, uniting insights from 92 experts across all WHO regions to guide practice in more than 35 countries; in Australia, he has secured over $12.5 million in competitive research funding since 2023 and published extensively in leading journals, addressing critical areas such as opioid overprescribing, transitions of care, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication safety.
Presenting the award on the final day of Medicines Management 2025 (MM2025) in Melbourne, AdPha President Assoc. Prof Tom Simpson FANZCAP (Lead&Mgmt) says Assoc. Prof. Penm’s impact reflects the highest ideals of the profession.
‘Jonathan exemplifies clinical excellence, intellectual rigour and a deep commitment to patient-centred care while ensuring pharmacy remains at the forefront of health system improvement.
‘Beyond his prolific research, he is a visionary leader and tireless advocate for the profession serving on several state inquiries while representing AdPha in multiple leadership roles.
‘He brings evidence, insight and determination to every forum he steps into helping to secure real wins for the profession such as stronger investment in the hospital pharmacy workforce. At the same time, he is also empowering others through his advocacy training and extensive service across AdPha.
‘Few individuals have had such a far-reaching influence on how pharmacy is practised both in Australia and around the world, and our profession is certainly stronger for it. He is an exceptionally deserving recipient of this award.’
