The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Parkville is a specialist paediatric hospital providing great care to infants, children and adolescents across Victoria and also those from other states and overseas. Our team of dedicated hospital pharmacists and support staff are a vital part of the healthcare team at the RCH and ensures the safe and effective use of medicines throughout all areas of the hospital. We provide:
- Clinical pharmacy services to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Children’s Cancer Centre, Children’s Neuroscience Centre, Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery, Adolescent Medicine, Mental Health, General Medical, Surgical, Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology, Rehabilitation, Hospital in the Home, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology and Respiratory wards
- Centralised outpatient and inpatient dispensary as well as satellite pharmacies on each floor
- Manufacturing of a large range of extemporaneous products to facilitate safe, accurate and convenient doses for paediatric patients
- Total parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, specialised fluids/medications and antibiotic infusors prepared in the aseptic manufacturing suite.
- Paediatric Medicines Information and Clinical Trials
- Multidisciplinary involvement with adverse drug reaction, drug usage, medication safety committees and speciality pharmacy services to areas such as immunisations, palliative care and quality.

Intern program information
Four intern positions are available in 2025 (government-funded)
- Pharmacy Interns will have a week of general orientation to the RCH pharmacy department.
- During the introductory weeks, interns will begin in operational areas of the department to consolidate their knowledge of basic technical skills and learn to use our world class electronic medical records system (EPIC). Interns will also spend time in our specialist paediatric medicines information centre and have a dedicated clinical teaching week.
- During the year, interns spend time in most areas of the hospital to provide clinical pharmacy services to wards and various medical specialities. Clinical rotations will usually be 3-4 weeks long, with shorter rotations to the paediatric and neonatal intensive care units.
- In addition, non-sterile and aseptic manufacturing will be incorporated into the year as well as exposure to outpatients dispensary, oncology pharmacy and other specialty areas.
- Each pharmacy intern is assigned his or her own preceptor for the year. Preceptors will mentor interns and evaluate an intern’s performance to assist with their development throughout the year.
- After a period of clinical pharmacy training, pharmacy interns will be given the opportunity to be responsible for the pharmacy services of an allocated ward for a 3-4-week period (with the support and supervision of pharmacists)
- RCH offers a comprehensive pharmacy intern tutorial and exam preparation program, covering a wide range of adult and paediatric clinical topics as well as primary healthcare, calculations and law/ethics.
- Pharmacy interns are given the opportunity to spend a week working in a community pharmacy of their choice to assist with exam preparation
- We strongly encourage all interns to take part in a research project in conjunction with a pharmacist/project supervisor.
