Campuses where pharmacy intern will work: Latrobe Regional Health (Traralgon)
Latrobe Regional Health (LRH), located in Traralgon West, is a modern fully integrated hospital servicing more than 300 beds. Our hospital treats over 130,000 people every year and is the regional referral hospital for the Gippsland area, servicing a population of over 260,000 residents.
The hospital provides an extensive range of services that include acute care, intensive/critical care, aged care, cancer care, elective surgery, emergency medicine, maternity, rehabilitation, paediatrics and mental health.
LRH is the central mental health facility in Gippsland, linking acute adult and geriatric psychiatric wards with eight community mental health centres across Gippsland.
The hospital has undergone a significant expansion which features a new and expanded Emergency Department, two endoscopy suites, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, two new 32-bed general medicine inpatient units and a cafe. More recently in March 2024 we have had further expansion including new inpatient beds, with 8 new operating theatres and 6 new ICU beds.
LRH is a teaching hospital affiliated with Monash University. The Monash School of Rural Health is located on site. The hospital provides a library service with access to the internet and an extensive range of journals/textbooks. Other services include salary packaging, Social Club activities and free staff car parking.
Regional information
Situated between the thriving communities of Traralgon and Morwell, Latrobe Regional Health is two hours (151km) east of Melbourne by car or V/Line train. Traralgon is located in the heart of Gippsland and offers an exciting blend of city and country lifestyles, as well as offering an extensive range of modern facilities and services.
The region provides easy access to the magical high country, snowfields, unspoilt beaches and the spectacular Gippsland lakes. Gippsland is also an ideal destination for wine and food lovers with endless gourmet and winery trails and offers an extensive range of events and entertainment celebrating the art, culture and heritage of the diverse region.
Pharmacy department
The Pharmacy department has a staffing of approximately 30 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians offering a comprehensive range of services that include:
- Operational and clinical pharmacy services in critical care unit, emergency department, medical, surgical, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, paediatrics and mental health
- Oncology service and on-site sterile manufacturing
- Antimicrobial stewardship and provision of medicines information to hospital inpatients, outpatients, and to other hospitals in the region
- Management and supply of clozapine for patients across the Gippsland region
- Clinical trials and Hospital in the Home
- Regional pharmacy services to two small hospitals and a local private hospital
- On-call and weekend pharmacy service
- Clinical education meetings within the pharmacy department
- Providing education to other health professionals including doctors and nurses as well as patient groups (e.g. heart failure, respiratory rehabilitation programs)
- Medication safety and quality improvement activities (e.g. medication safety walkrounds, audits)
In Late 2023, our pharmacy department entered into a unique, leading edge and synergistic education partnership with Alfred Health Pharmacy department, a team with a national reputation for originality and excellence. This unique opportunity blends aspects of clinical experience across both health services, a major tertiary and a major regional hospital. The long-term education partnership will deliver education programs including SHPA Resident Training program and Registrar Training programs in speciality areas such as perioperative services and many others to come at Latrobe Regional Health.
Intern program information
- LRH will be offering three intern positions in 2026 and offers participation in the Monash University Intern Foundation Program. Interns are not expected to work regular weekends.
- Each intern is supported by the Pharmacy department Education team which involves the Intern Program Co-ordinator (and Preceptor). They are also assigned to an individual mentor throughout the intern year.
- The intern training program includes support for learning and completing intern training program tasks, tutorial sessions, and practice exams.
- Intern tutorials are held weekly and cover an extensive range of clinical, legal and OTC topics.
- Rotations are between 4-6 weeks allowing integration into the clinical pharmacy service, development of pharmacist skills as well as regular dispensary duties.
- 2-week participation in a community pharmacy placement to consolidate OTC and clinical skills.
- Interns are encouraged to participate in regular clinical and case presentation meetings to build and extend knowledge in a team environment.
