Alfred Care Group consists of The Alfred Hospital, Caulfield Hospital and Sandringham Hospital. The Alfred Hospital is a major tertiary referral teaching hospital. It has a role in the provision of specialist tertiary and quaternary services on a state-wide and national basis. Specialist areas include trauma, emergency and intensive care, comprehensive cancer services, blood diseases, melanoma, bone marrow transplant, respiratory medicine, cardiology/cardiovascular, neurosurgery, general and specialist surgery and medicine, psychiatry and diagnostic services. The Alfred’s state-wide services include heart and lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, burns, HIV/AIDS, haemophilia, sexual health and hyperbaric medicine. 

Over 300 pharmacists and 70 support staff enable the Alfred Care Group Pharmacy department to provide a seven day a week, extended hour clinical pharmacy service incorporating a range of innovative services through five programs: Clinical Pharmacy Services, Quality Use of Medicines Services, Operational Services, Research, and Education.

Intern program information

7 pharmacy intern positions are available (government-funded)

Orientation – Every pharmacy intern undergoes a one-week orientation program with an introduction to the department. Pharmacy interns will also be allocated a three-week clinical orientation rotation with their allocated mentor. The purpose of the clinical orientation is to develop their skills in fundamental clinical pharmacy processes and to become familiar with the workplace. 

Rotations – Pharmacy intern rotations are primarily based at The Alfred Hospital. Rotations include:

  • Operational rotations (dispensaries & aseptic preparations): 8 weeks in total
  • Clinical rotations (core): 6 weeks in General Medicine (includes rotation to Sandringham Hospital), 7 weeks in Surgical, 5 weeks in Cardiology, 5 weeks in Aged Care (includes rotation to Caulfield Hospital), 2 weeks in Respiratory
  • Clinical rotation (elective): 3 weeks in a clinical area of intern choice, with options including Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care, HIV, Infectious Diseases, Renal/Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Brain, Haematology and Oncology and Psychiatry
  • Medicines Information: 1 week
  • Medicines Safety: 1 week
  • Support – Each pharmacy intern will be allocated a dedicated mentor to provide guidance, advice and assistance with exam preparation. They will also be allocated a ‘research mentor’, who is a Lead/Senior Pharmacist who will assist with the development of a research project. Alfred Care Group also has a Pharmacy Intern Coordinator (member of the Learning and Development Team) to guide pharmacy interns throughout the year. 
  • Education Program – The education program delivers weekly intern education sessions on a range of clinical, primary care and exam preparation topics. Clinical sessions are presented by clinical pharmacists working specifically in the relevant clinical area. 
  • Research and Governance portfolio - Each pharmacy intern contributes toward a research project as well as governance in a specified portfolio. The aim is to give each intern an opportunity to develop research, leadership and administrative skills in a chosen speciality. Pharmacy interns are allocated time throughout the year, as well as a dedicated 3-week research rotation, to focus on completing their project. 
  • Practice Exams - Multiple practice exams are provided during the year to help interns become familiar with exam structure and questions. Four practice oral exams are run by the department under strict exam conditions to simulate the real environment.
