WA Branch | Voluntary Assisted Dying in WA: Shedding light on the role of a pharmacist in our Statewide Service

Voluntary assisted dying is the legal process that enables a patient to access medication that will cause their death. In Western Australia, this came into effect in July 2021, making it a fairly new area for healthcare professionals to be navigating.

Join us for this in person lecture to learn more about the unique role that a pharmacists plays in the Statewide Pharmacy service team.

Learning Objectives

  • Outline the Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) process in Western Australia
  • Describe the role of the Statewide Pharmacy Service in VAD
  • Overview the role of the Authorised Disposer
  • Identify referral pathways for VAD and appropriate resources

This will be a hybrid event, in-person and virtual.

Tanya Burgess, BPharm, Pharmacy Coordinator, North Metropolitan Health Service - WA Voluntary Assisted Dying Statewide Pharmacy Service 

Tanya Burgess has been working in the WA Voluntary Assisted Statewide Pharmacy (SWPS) service since July 2021 and has worked as the Coordinator of the team since October 2023.   

 This activity has been accredited for 1 hour of Group-1 CPD (or 1 CPD credit), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan.

The accreditation number is S2024/16.

  

The program addresses pharmacist competency standards, including:

  • Standard 1.1.1 Promote a culture of professionalism
  • Standard 1.1.2 Uphold the professional role of a pharmacist
  • Standard 1.2.1 Support ethical professional practice
  • Standard 1.2.2 Manage ethical issues arising in practice
  • Standard 1.3.1 Comply with statute law, guidelines, codes and standards
  • Standard 1.6.1 Collaborate to improve quality and safety across the continuum of care
  • Standard 2.1.1 Respect the personal characteristics, rights, preferences, values, beliefs, needs and cultural and linguistic diversity of patients and other clients, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Standard 3.1.1 Obtain relevant health and medicines information
  • Standard 3.1.2 Assess medication management practices and needs
  • Standard 3.1.3 Collaborate to develop a medication management strategy or plan

Cancellation policy

  • Membership rate is only applicable if you are a member at the time of the seminar. Should your membership lapse, or if you resign you will be invoiced for the difference in registration.
  • Cancellations must be made in writing.
  • Cancellations received before 6 weeks prior to the event will receive a full refund. Non-members will be charged a $50 handling fee.
  • Cancellations received between 6 weeks and 1 week prior to the event will receive a 50% refund of the registration fee.
  • Cancellations received less than a week prior to the event will NOT be refunded.
  • SHPA reserve the right to cancel a seminar or make changes to the program
  • If SHPA cancels or defers the event you will receive 100% of the registration fee but SHPA bears no responsibility for any costs incurred  (such as flights, accommodation, travel or expenses) or loss of income.
  • It is recommended that participants obtain adequate insurance cover for travel and accommodation.
  • Transfer of registration – as an alternative to cancellation your registration may be transferred to another member of your organisation or another event (if the chosen seminar is a higher cost you will be subject to further charges). A request MUST be made in writing to the Federal Secretariat prior to the event.
  • If you are unable to attend SHPA policy is that handouts can not be made available as ‘stand alone’ materials

Venue/Accessbility requirements

  • For special accessibility requirements for in-person events please complete the relevant section when registering online and this information will be forwarded to third parties.
  • SHPA are in no way responsible for any connectivity issues as a result of the participants internet connection or hardware issues or other external factors impacting the internet, that are out of SHPA’s control.

Catering/Dietary requirements

  • Please complete the necessary section when registering online. SHPA will notify third parties such as caterers/suppliers of any dietary requirements.
  • Whilst every care is taken to notify venues of dietary requirements, SHPA cannot guarantee completely allergy free meals, nor be held responsible for any adverse reaction. Any registrant who has notified SHPA of a dietary requirement should make themselves known to the seminar coordinator and/or venue staff upon their arrival.
  • Some dietary requirements such as Kosher meals may incur an additional cost which is the responsilbility of the delegate. SHPA will notify you in advance.

Recording/Filming

  • Recording and/or filming is not permitted by registrants. Please note this event may be recorded for the SHPA website and/or photos may be taken for use in SHPA resources and publications.
  • Registrants are not permitted to record or film any part of SHPA events in any format including audio recording or video recording or through use of mobile devices for filming

Registration

  • Numbers are capped so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note the only way to guarantee a space is to register online. Please ensure you register prior to booking your flights and accommodation.
  • If you do not receive a confirmation email then you are not registered for the event and will not be able to be accommodated on the day of the event. If you are following up on registration please ensure you contact the Federal Secretariat at least a week prior to the event.
