ACT Branch | Gene therapy session

Join the SHPA ACT Branch for a webinar on gene therapy.

This webinar will provide an introduction to gene therapy and an update on developing GMOs.

The first expert presenter Kerry Watts will present 'Genes or Genies - An introduction to gene therpay'. 

Learning objectives: 

  • Define in vivo and ex vivo gene therapies
  • Recognise the regulatory pathways for gene therapies
  • Identify the role of the pharmacist in the translation of gene therapy into clinical practice

This is followed by a presentation by Mark Clifford titled 'Developing a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) & Advanced Therapies Pharmacy Production Service for Clinical Trials

Learning objectives: 

  • Describe the "5-P's" of Good Manufacturing Practice
  • Discuss the timelines involved in developing a GMO & Advanced Therapies service
  • Overview Physical Containment Levels and their relation to Biohazards
  • Outline the different GMO dealings and the involvement of the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR)

Mark Clifford, Senior Pharmacy Technician - Sterile & PC2 Production Services, Pharmacy Department, Westmead Hospital, Western Sydney Local Health District, NSW

Mark is the Senior Pharmacy Technician for Sterile & PC2 Production at Westmead Hospital. Managing the technical aspects of pharmaceutical production - including GMO, advanced therapies and clinical trials management; Mark provides training and support to staff, clinicians, researchers and students on the management, handling and reconstitution of sterile and advance therapy pharmaceuticals to support high quality care to patients.   

As a regular participant with SHPA, Mark has served as Technician Representative and Technician Observer for the SHPA NSW Branch (2016-2020); is a former chair of the Technicians & Assistants Specialty Practice Leadership Committee; and has presented and chaired at numerous Medicines Management Conferences.   

A member of the SkillsIQ Technical Advisory Committee (2018-2022), he had extensive involvement in the redevelopment of the Certificate III & Certificate IV in Hospital / Health Services Pharmacy Support qualifications and is a keen supporter of the expansion and development of the pharmacy technician role. 

Kerry Watts, Senior Project and Policy Officer | Advanced Therapeutics | Office for Health and Medical Research, NSW Ministry of Health, NSW

Kerry is a consultant compounding and research pharmacist working as a Senior Project and Policy Officer for the Office for Health and Medical Research, NSW Ministry of Health. Authoring the Policy Directive for the Preparation of Pharmaceutical and Advanced Therapeutic Products, her key priority is to improve and standardise national compounding processes to support the translation of advanced therapeutics into clinical practice and improve patient health outcomes. 

 This activity has been accredited for 1 hour of Group-1 CPD (or 1 CPD credit), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan.

The accreditation number is S2024/38.

The program addresses pharmacist competency standards, including:

  • Standard 3.2.2 Provide primary care and promote judicious use of medicines
  • Standard 3.5.1 Review trends in medicine use
  • Standard 3.5.2 Promote evidence-based medicine use

(National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia, 2016)

Cancellation policy

  • Membership rate is only applicable if you are a member at the time of the seminar. Should your membership lapse, or if you resign you will be invoiced for the difference in registration.
  • Cancellations must be made in writing.
  • Cancellations received before 6 weeks prior to the event will receive a full refund. Non-members will be charged a $50 handling fee.
  • Cancellations received between 6 weeks and 1 week prior to the event will receive a 50% refund of the registration fee.
  • Cancellations received less than a week prior to the event will NOT be refunded.
  • SHPA reserve the right to cancel a seminar or make changes to the program
  • If SHPA cancels or defers the event you will receive 100% of the registration fee but SHPA bears no responsibility for any costs incurred  (such as flights, accommodation, travel or expenses) or loss of income.
  • It is recommended that participants obtain adequate insurance cover for travel and accommodation.
  • Transfer of registration – as an alternative to cancellation your registration may be transferred to another member of your organisation or another event (if the chosen seminar is a higher cost you will be subject to further charges). A request MUST be made in writing to the Federal Secretariat prior to the event.
  • If you are unable to attend SHPA policy is that handouts can not be made available as ‘stand alone’ materials

Venue/Accessbility requirements

  • For special accessibility requirements for in-person events please complete the relevant section when registering online and this information will be forwarded to third parties.
  • SHPA are in no way responsible for any connectivity issues as a result of the participants internet connection or hardware issues or other external factors impacting the internet, that are out of SHPA’s control.

Catering/Dietary requirements

  • Please complete the necessary section when registering online. SHPA will notify third parties such as caterers/suppliers of any dietary requirements.
  • Whilst every care is taken to notify venues of dietary requirements, SHPA cannot guarantee completely allergy free meals, nor be held responsible for any adverse reaction. Any registrant who has notified SHPA of a dietary requirement should make themselves known to the seminar coordinator and/or venue staff upon their arrival.
  • Some dietary requirements such as Kosher meals may incur an additional cost which is the responsilbility of the delegate. SHPA will notify you in advance.

Recording/Filming

  • Recording and/or filming is not permitted by registrants. Please note this event may be recorded for the SHPA website and/or photos may be taken for use in SHPA resources and publications.
  • Registrants are not permitted to record or film any part of SHPA events in any format including audio recording or video recording or through use of mobile devices for filming

Registration

  • Numbers are capped so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note the only way to guarantee a space is to register online. Please ensure you register prior to booking your flights and accommodation.
  • If you do not receive a confirmation email then you are not registered for the event and will not be able to be accommodated on the day of the event. If you are following up on registration please ensure you contact the Federal Secretariat at least a week prior to the event.
