Asad Patanwala | Chair of Clinical Pharmacy | Royal Prince Alfred Hospital | University of Sydney 

Professor Patanwala is Chair of Clinical Pharmacy and is jointly based at the University of Sydney School of Pharmacy and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH). He is a registered pharmacist in both the United States and Australia and is a Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist (BCCCP). He completed his Doctor of Pharmacy at Drake University and worked at the University of Chicago Hospital for a few years. Subsequent to this he completed a pharmacy residency and a specialized residency in critical care at the University of Arizona Medical Center. He then completed a Masters in Public Health (biostatistics) and served as a clinician (ICU / emergency department) academic at the University of Arizona. He has been involved in international clinical trials (REMAP-CAP) and clinical practice guidelines from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He serves on the Clinical Trials Sub-Committee for the Sydney Local Health District and Drug Committee for RPAH. He has published 180+ journal articles and book chapters including those in NEJM, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, and Crit Care Med

Dr David Gattas | Clinical Associate Professor, Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney Senior Staff Specialist, Intensive Care Unit | Royal Prince Alfred Hospital | Clinical Associate Professor | Sydney Medical School | The University of Sydney 

Associate Professor David Gattas is a senior staff intensivist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA). He trained at the University of Sydney and its associated teaching hospitals before completing a 2-year clinical and research fellowship at Sunnybrook Medical Centre in Toronto, Canada. Since then, he has accumulated over twenty years of clinical experience as an intensivist at RPA. He maintains a strong professional interest in clinical research, with an emphasis on multicentric randomised controlled trials. He has published on a range of subjects, with a concentration on resuscitation fluids and renal replacement therapy. He has served for many years on RPA’s Human Research Ethics Committee clinical trial subcommittee and founded the hospital’s rapid response system in 2008 which he continues to help manage as Chair of that hospital committee. He learned very early in his career that intensive care is a team sport where all craft groups are needed to work well together to achieve the best clinical outcomes. As a big fan of critical care pharmacists, he is delighted to be invited to speak today and his only complaint about critical care pharmacy support in the ICU is that there needs to be more of it.

Dr. Arwa Abu Sardaneh | Critical Care Pharmacist, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, NSW

Arwa is a critical care pharmacist at Royal Prince Alfred hospital and is an associate academic at the School of Pharmacy, University of Sydney.

She recently completed her PhD on the role of metaraminol and other vasopressors in critically ill patients with shock.

Grainne studied Pharmacy in Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland and worked in the Royal Liverpool Hospital for 3 years before moving to Australia. Since then, most of her time has been spent working in the Canberra Hospital ICU with short periods of time in Calvary Public Hospital Bruce and the Alfred ICU in Melbourne.  

The program addresses pharmacist competency standards, including:

CPD Accreditation

This activity has been accredited for 2 hours of Group-1 CPD and 3 hours of Group-2 CPD (for a total of 8 CPD credits), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan.

The accreditation number is S2023/63.

Cancellation policy

  • Membership rate is only applicable if you are a member at the time of the seminar. Should your membership lapse, or if you resign you will be invoiced for the difference in registration.
  • Cancellations must be made in writing.
  • Cancellations received before 6 weeks prior to the event will receive a full refund. Non-members will be charged a $50 handling fee.
  • Cancellations received between 6 weeks and 1 week prior to the event will receive a 50% refund of the registration fee.
  • Cancellations received less than a week prior to the event will NOT be refunded.
  • SHPA reserve the right to cancel a seminar or make changes to the program
  • If SHPA cancels or defers the event you will receive 100% of the registration fee but SHPA bears no responsibility for any costs incurred  (such as flights, accommodation, travel or expenses) or loss of income.
  • It is recommended that participants obtain adequate insurance cover for travel and accommodation.
  • Transfer of registration – as an alternative to cancellation your registration may be transferred to another member of your organisation or another event (if the chosen seminar is a higher cost you will be subject to further charges). A request MUST be made in writing to the Federal Secretariat prior to the event.
  • If you are unable to attend SHPA policy is that handouts can not be made available as ‘stand alone’ materials

Catering/Dietary requirements

  • Whilst every care is taken to notify venues of dietary requirements, SHPA cannot guarantee completely allergy free meals, nor be held responsible for any adverse reaction. Any registrant who has notified SHPA of a dietary requirement should make themselves known to the seminar coordinator and/or venue staff upon their arrival.
  • Some dietary requirements such as Kosher meals may incur an additional cost which is the responsilbility of the delegate. SHPA will notify you in advance.

Recording/Filming

  • Recording and/or filming is not permitted by registrants. Please note this event may be recorded for the SHPA website and/or photos may be taken for use in SHPA resources and publications.
  • Registrants are not permitted to record or film any part of SHPA events in any format including audio recording or video recording or through use of mobile devices for filming
